No, it’s not “the end of the world as we know it.” But, it is an end to an era in our Lake communities.

In an official press release this week, Georgia Power announced that it plans to close the final units 3 and 4 and demolish part of the structure of Plant Branch in 2015.  The close of this plant will be the end of an era for both Putnam and Baldwin Counties.  The good news is that this does not mean any loss of jobs for employees.

What does this mean for the Lake areas & the land owners of lake properties?

• According to Georgia Power’s Land Management division, the closure will not mean a change for any land owners in the Lake Oconee or Lake Sinclair area.  The removal and closure of Plant Branch affects the Power Management Divison of Georgia Power not the Land Management of the Lakes.
• The closure of this facility will mean that Putnam County governments, both city and county, will lose a substantial amount in sales tax revenues & property taxes.   How Putnam County officials are planning on dealing with this loss is yet to be determined.

I am sure that in the coming months Georgia Power will release further details on what the plans are for the site of Plant Branch on Lake Sinclair and that Georgia Power will continue to manage the Lake areas to benefit all property owners.
